Roger Allen Ort was born April 11, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri and died May 24, 2019 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He was the son of Oscar A. and Freeda E. (Coombe) Ort. Roger lived in Donnellson, Iowa until the age of four when his family moved to North Little Rock, Arkansas. Roger attended North Little Rock schools and graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1969. After earning an Associate Degree in Electromechanical Technology, Roger went to work for Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1973 in the Signal Department and retired from Union Pacific Railroad in 2013. Roger loved the outdoors and animals, with his passion being fishing. He loved fishing with friends, family, strangers, or alone and had many tales to tell. He was always after that big bass and was very good at catching more than the fishing partner of the day. Roger never met a stranger. He loved talking, to anyone, for hours! He certainly had the gift of gab and loved to share that gift, whether you wanted to be the recipient of that gift or not. Roger also had a big heart and would give the shirt off his back to anyone that needed it.
Roger was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and a granddaughter, Bethany A. Bynum. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joy E. (Schoemaker) Ort; one daughter, Kimberly S. (Ort) Bynum and son in law Eddie; two sons, Jared A. Ort and Nathan K. Ort; grandchildren, Jonah Bynum (Ashton), Mallory Bynum (Rebecca), Dakota Ort, Mayana, Ahava, and Nataleah Ort, Jaxon Ort, and Brooke Bynum; one brother Randy F. Ort (Charlene), and many nieces, nephews, Schoemaker siblings-in-law, and friends.
Roger will be cremated, and a memorial service and celebration of his life will be Friday, June 7th at 11:00 a.m., with visitation preceding the service at 10:00 a.m., at Second Baptist Church-Downtown, 222 E. 8th Street, Little Rock. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of UPRR Signal Department/Brotherhood of RR Signalmen. Because of Roger’s love of the outdoors and our belief in the mission and vision of Lake Nixon Outdoor Center, Outdoor Preschool and Day Camp, the family requests that memorials be made to Lake Nixon, a ministry of 2nd Baptist Church-Downtown. Other charities of choice are the American Cancer Society and any animal shelter or animal rescue.
