Mary Massengill

d. November 18, 2010

Mary Evelyn Massengill, age 88, of Clarksville died on Thursday, November 18th, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband Lance W. Massengill, and a daughter Gail Young. She is survived by son Warren Massengill of Little Rock, son Norman Massengill and his wife Robin of Russellville, and daughter Sondra and her husband Richard McKelvey of Clarksville. Other survivors are a brother, Eugene Ritter of Concord, AR, and a sister, Floy Brent of Belton, MO. She had 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Massengill was the last survivor of three couples—father, two sons, and their wives—who built their own "photo trailers" and traveled the state during the late 1930’s to county fairs, reunions and town squares making photographs . A collection of over 700 of these photos, along with a diary and log book, has been beautifully rendered in an exhibit currently at the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies in Little Rock. These photos of rural and small-town Arkansans from the Depression era are historically and artistically significant, according to Maxine Payne, Hendrix College Art Professor and a family friend, who produced the exhibit and an art book titled "Making Pictures—Three for a Dime".
