On Sunday, March 10, 2024, Michael Leon Shively of Glenwood, Arkansas passed away at the age of 67. Mike was born on April 9, 1956, in Huntington, Indiana to Samuel and Katheryn (Searles) Shively.
He was one of seven children. Mike (Maniac) Shively grew up in Indiana, running around, causing havoc with his brothers, giving his sisters and parents a hard time. He was a truck driver most of his life. We younger girls loved having the opportunity to ride along with him in the summers.
But his favorite job of all time was being Papaw. Any time he thought the grandkids needed something he was there to get it. It didn’t matter if it was a pair of shoes that they really did need or a little puppy that they or he thought they needed. They knew if they asked Papaw, they were going to get it. If he called and heard one of the grandkids crying or even slightly upset, he was off the phone and in the driveway to kidnap that baby and make everything better.
Mike took pride in all his children. We all knew how much he loved us. Mike would brag about his girls to anyone who would listen. He didn’t teach us patience, but he did teach us to work hard for the things we wanted. He taught us how to love unconditionally, by the way he loved us which also taught us how to love our own children. He always made us feel like it was alright to come home when life wasn’t working out and we needed help to get it together again (and I did, twice). He loved having any of us in the shop, teaching us how to work on our own cars. Of course, teaching us how to work hard and fix anything came with learning a few cuss words along the way.
He was not a patient or understanding guy who you could compromise with. When he was right, he was right, even when he was wrong. When he realized he hurt one of us girls’ feelings, he didn’t apologize; he would call us and ask us to go to breakfast with him. That was his way of saying sorry and we knew it. And we had better accept the offer and have breakfast. He didn’t always see eye to eye with any of his kids, but we all knew when we needed him, he would be there. Now, we also knew he would yell and call us a dumbass for the situations we got in, but he showed up every time to help us get it straight.
Mike is proceeded in death by his wife, Virginia (Lamb) Shively; parents, Samuel and Katheryn (Searles) Shively; two brothers, Russel and Jim Shively; brother-in-law, David Newsome; and one grandson.
He is survived by four siblings, Becky (Larry) Studebaker, Samuel (Carman) Shively, Brenda Newsome and Jerry (Vicky) Shively; His eight children, Michael Shively Jr., Emily Wright, Samual Shively, Rachel Griffin, Amanda Hamilton, Ashley Locke, Jessica Coleman and Lilly Mitchell; 18 grandkids, 10 great-grandkids, and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial will be in May, date and time to be announced later.
