John Thomas Smith, M.D.

Dr. John Thomas “Dr. Tom” Smith passed away on December 19, 2024, from a short battle with metastatic cancer of the prostate. Born on December 29, 1939, he, at nearly 85 years old, was able to celebrate his 62nd anniversary on December 18th with his wife, Margarette. He was blessed with a son, John Mark, and a daughter, Ann Michelle, who preceded him in 2021. In addition to his son and his wife, he is survived by a daughter-in-law, Ginger, sister Suzanne McDonald and brother Wm. A. Smith, three granddaughters, Peyton, Jordan and Sydney, and 2 step-grandchildren, Camryn and Joshua “JT”. Dr. Smith was the son of the late Dr. John William Smith and Mary Frances Hill Smith. He graduated in 1957 from Little Rock’s Central High School, then attending Southern Methodist University, and next admitted to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, graduating with the class of 1964. He completed his internship at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati Ohio, then his general surgery at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, and subsequently completed in July 1969 a residency in Ear, Nose, and Throat, Head and Back surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York, New York. He, in September 1969, began his service to the United States Air Force as Chief of the ENT Center at Mather Air Force Base, earning the nickname “Hawkeye” as the popular movie “M.A.S.H.” was released. Dr. Smith entered private practice with his father, Dr. John William Smith, in September 1971 and was partners with him until his father’s death. He continued his work, in Little Rock, with Arkansas Otolaryngology until he semi-retired after 40 years in practice, where he moved in 2004 with his wife to Heber Springs, opening a small clinic, with Dr. Lloyd Langston. His final retirement came after 50 years of being in practice, loving every minute of his time with his patients and colleagues. Both doctors felt privileged to provide great care. Services will be held 11 am on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 20 Woodland Cove, Heber Springs, Arkansas 72543.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church of Heber Springs.
