Joan Blackman Simms, 90, passed away September 9th, 2022, surrounded by her loving husband of 67 years, Don Simms. She was born on February 16th, 1932, to Harold and Velma Blackman. Joan grew up in Brinkley, Ark., with her brother, Jim Blackman. She married Don Simms April 22nd, 1956.
A graduate of Brinkley High School, Joan received her BSE degree from University of Central Arkansas and her Masters degree from UALR. Joan began her career in education teaching physical education in El Dorado, Ark., Pasadena, Texas, and Benton, Ark., then went on to teach orientation and mobility at the Arkansas School for the Blind. Joan was presented the Joyce Ogburn Memorial Award for outstanding service in the field of education of the blind and visually impaired.
Joan was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Benton and Covenant Sunday School class. Joan was an avid reader, enjoyed oil painting, and was a lover of animals. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend.
Joan is survived by her husband, Don Simms; one daughter, Cindy, and son-in-law, Greg Nichols, of Honolulu, Hawaii; two granddaughters, Natalie and Katie; and one great-grandson, Pierce.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation and thanks to Kacie Milton for her love and care of Joan.
A service will be held on Friday, September 16th at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Benton, Ark.
