James “Larry” Barton passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025. He was born in Strong, Arkansas on March 31, 1935 to James Alvin and Athleen Goynes Barton. The family moved to Fordyce in 1937.
Larry called Fordyce home. He enjoyed playing all sports, especially football and was the co-captain of the 1952 team. He was also President of the Student Body of Fordyce High School that year. He married Sharlene Little while both were attending Arkansas A & M College in Monticello, Arkansas. He graduated with a degree in Forestry. After graduating he worked for the Soil Conservation Service for 27 years. He did forestry consulting work in Hope, Arkansas after leaving the Soil Conservation Service. Larry enjoyed the outdoors and nature and spent his entire career basically outside. He received a Kellogg Fellowship to attend North Carolina State University in 1970.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Sharlene Little Barton and son Joe Davis Barton. He is survived by his 2 sons Jim Barton(Juli) & John Barton, daughter Betty Bennett(Dennis), 2 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends
The family will celebrate his life in a private service.
