Gay Travis Phelps Certain was born October 17, 1950, into her loving Ivo and Virginia Phelps Family with one Older Brother Ivo, and two older sisters Lin and Sue. They lived on Pine Manor in Little Rock, AR. Her mom and dad have passed away, however her older siblings and their children whom she dearly loved are still living.
She became a believer at an early age through Vacation Bible School. Her walk with the Lord really blossomed in her association with Young Life in her High School years at Hall High in Little Rock. She became a life-long supporter of Young Life working as a volunteer and also a financial supporter.
She attended Massey Junior College in Atlanta GA where she met her future husband, William Andrew Certain in spring of 1970. They were married in Little Rock at Pulaski Heights Methodist Church December 9, 1972. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Fashion Advertising.
When a flock of Evening Grosbeaks visited her first bird feeder at our first apartment in Atlanta, she became a life-long Birder, eventually working for Wild Birds Unlimited in the heights of Little Rock for almost 25 years.
She discovered the art of Calligraphy in the Fall of 1976. All other Arts and Craft pursuits were ‘abandoned’ for her love of the Calligraphic Arts. Through the years she attended many Classes and Conferences to learn different styles and various aspects of Calligraphic Painting. She produced a Bible Verse Calendar for many years. She worked as a Calligraphic Sign Artist and produced many original works, most of which were renditions of various Bible Verses.
She had two sons, Joshua Certain and Matthew Certain whom she loved dearly. She loved her daughters in law, Robin and Crystal, and dearly loved her grandsons from Matt and Crystal, Jonas, Elijah and Kane.
After Drew, her husband, drug her all over the south and some into the North, they moved back to Little Rock in 1994.
Gay Travis dearly loved her dogs. She grew up with a full-size poodle, Shadrack, who she taught to roll over on its back and “Die for your Country”…. Shadrack was followed by a Cocker Luke, a Golden Misty, and two more Cockers Lizzy and then Molly who misses her ‘mom’ very much.
Gay Travis Transferred from this life to Life Indeed to her God the Father and her Savior Jesus, the Messiah of Israel on Thanksgiving afternoon just before 5:00, 11-24-2022. She had been a three year long Metastatic Breast Cancer battle. The kind doctors and nurses at CARTI Little Rock, were wonderful. She will be greatly missed.
