Gary L. Hum,69, of Conway formerly of North Little Rock, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on August 26, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born March 28,1955 to Ernestine Zimmerebner Hum and John F. Hum, Jr. Gary is preceded in death by his infant son, Randall David, and his mother, Ernestine Hum.
He passes on his dedication to family to his wife, Charlsie Johnson Hum, his son Leo Hum (Megan), daughter Diana Sooter and the true joys of his life; grandchildren, Brooklyn Sooter, Clayton and Jonah Hum. Gary will always be cherished by his father, John, sister Vickey Metrailer (Jim), brother Pat (Lisa) plus a tribe of nieces and nephews.
Gary graduated from Catholic High School for Boys in 1973. He attended the University of Arkansas and received a degree in Environmental Health and Science from The University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He retired after a 34 year career at Central Arkansas Water as Director of Source and Treatment.
Gary was an excellent poker player and always enjoyed playing after holiday meals with his family or just for fun with his friends. He loved camping and kayaking the beautiful Buffalo River and fishing for smallmouth bass. He also enjoyed fishing the boundary waters in Ely, Minnesota. He would spend hours reading the racing forms, contemplating which horse had the best odds to win the race at Oaklawn in Hot Springs. Gary was an avid reader and read volumes of novels and anything related to history. The last several years, he spent his time working at his small “farm” in Quitman, Arkansas, his little piece of heaven.
