Earl Norton

October 25, 1951 — April 9, 2015

Earl Wardell Norton passed away peacefully on April 9, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Norton; father-in-law Bill Fountain; son Phillip Norton; daughter-in-law Jaime Norton; two granddaughters Ava and Vivian Norton, as well as many brothers and sisters. He is preceded in death by his father Gaines B. Norton, Sr. and his mother Ann Norton.

Earl was born October 25, 1951 in Baton Rouge, LA. He was raised in Little Rock as the third of seven siblings. He attended Holy Souls School and graduated from Little Rock Hall High in 1969. Earl was a talented musician, playing the saxophone in high school; as well as guitar in several bands such as Soul Society and Albatross. He was part of the psychedelic music movement in the mid-south. He continued to play music through most of his life.

Earl worked his way through college playing music, and graduated from UALR in 1973 with a degree in Accounting. He later earned his CPA. After working in the private sector for a short while, he went to work for the Arkansas Division of Legislative Audit. He retired from there in 2001. Never content to relax, he went back to work in 2002 for the Arkansas Insurance Department.

Earl also bought a home in the Quapaw Quarter in 1972. The house was in terrible condition and likely would have been torn down. He worked constantly to restore and maintain it over the years. He was one of the first to realize the historic value of the homes in the Quapaw Quarter and was always pleased that he was able to save one. It was the only home he ever owned.

Earl enjoyed many things in life. He was an avid gardener, a great cook, loved to travel, loved great music, liked a good scotch and loved a cheap one even better. He had a subversive sense of humor and a curmudgeonly fa+ade that hid a loving and giving heart. He will be missed.

A celebration of Earl’s life will be held Friday April 17 at the Rosemont Inn (515 West 15th Street in Little Rock) from 5:30 to 7:30. Friends and relatives are encouraged to drop in.

Arrangements entrusted to Arkansas Cremation. Guests may register at www.arkansascremation.com.
