Vollrad J. "Hans" von Berg died peacefully in his home at Good Samaritan Society-Hot Springs Village, AR, Monday, June 16, 2014.
Hans was born December 22, 1928 to the late Dr. Johannes and Elizabeth von Berg in Detroit, Michigan. He remained in Detroit through high school and college, eventually graduating from Wayne State University with a B.S. in chemistry.
In 1951, Hans was drafted into the Army, serving in the Army Chemical Core as a researcher. His team sought ways to protect soldiers from gas and chemical attacks during the Korean Conflict. Hans married Lenore Sliter while he was still in the Army. When he was released from military duty in 1953, Hans and Lee returned to Detroit and Wayne State University, he to earn his medical degree, and Lee to pursue her masters. Upon graduation, Hans practiced general surgery for two years before becoming one of the first surgeons to specialize in pediatric surgery. He practiced at both St. John’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Michigan. In later years he was referred to as one of the "grandfathers" of pediatric surgery. Hans belonged to many Medical Societies over the years and served as Chief of Surgery at St. John’s Hospital Hans and Lee moved into their Hot Springs Village home on 44 Hartura Way in 1990, where they remained for 22 years before moving to Cedar Lodge in 2012. Hans is survived by Lee; his wife of more than 61 years, one sister; Freya Lake of Portage, Michigan, sister-in-law Sharon Johannson of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on July 1, 2014 in the Good Samaritan Chapel, 121 Cortez Road, Hot Springs Village, AR. Arrangements entrusted to Cremations of Arkansas.
