David Armstrong Miles, "Doc" 92, passed away on March 3, 2018. David was born in El Dorado, Arkansas on September 22, 1925, to Dorothy Armstrong Miles from El Dorado, and Walter Carrigan Miles from Old Washington. During WW II, David served in the Navy as a Hospital Apprentice First Class in the Pacific and was assigned to the USMC Artillery 3rd Amphibious Corps in Okinawa. After the war, he attended the University of Arkansas. He graduated from UAMS in 1952, and completed residencies in Neurosurgery and Neurology and a research fellowship at the Neurological Institute at Columbia University in New York City, NY. Before moving back to Little Rock in the 1960’s, David practiced Neurosurgery in Mobile, Alabama. In Little Rock, David was Chief of Neurosurgery at the VA hospital and an Assistant Professor at UAMS. In the 1970’s and 1980’s he went into private practice as a neurologist and was on staff at St. Vincent Infirmary, Baptist Medical Center, Southwest Hospital, and Doctor’s Hospital. In the 1990’s, David specialized his practice to electrodiagnostic medicine, and was the first in the state to receive this board certification. While in his 70’s, David went back to school and became active in theatre productions at UALR and was loved by all. David is preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother, Walter "Sonny" Miles, Jr. David is survived by his wife of 49 years Darlene Miles, son David Miles II., daughter Dorothy Graves, son-in-law Sean Graves, grandchildren Rowan and Ari Graves, and nephew Walter Sonny Miles III. There will be a memorial service Friday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Presbyterian Church.
